Gates
Wesleyan
Church is a local congregation of
the
Central New York
District of
the
Wesleyan
Church. The denomination has its
roots in the Methodist movement under
John and Charles
Wesley in 18th century England.
By 1843 the Methodist Episcopal Church in America
had neglected the Bible’s emphasis on holiness as well as abandoned Wesley’s
opposition
to slavery, so a new denomination was formed to restore those values
to the Wesleyan heritage. Over the ensuing years this denomination eventually
merged with several other holiness bodies to ultimately become
The Wesleyan Church (1968).
Gates
Wesleyan Church
had its beginnings in 1932. Over the years it has been responsible for also
helping to start the Spencerport
Wesleyan
Church,
Penfield
Wesleyan Church,
and one in the Hilton/North Greece area.
