Two-Week Prayer Enrichment[1] The following is a suggested outline for fourteen days of quiet times with the Lord. It is designed to help you draw closer to Him, to broaden your prayer skills, and to give you a variety of patterns to help keep your prayer times fresh and meaningful with Him. Some of it draws on materials found in the resources of this book. Suggestions: For those who have the time and desire, there are several books you could start reading. Begin with the one that appeals most to you.
For persons more experienced in prayer:
Overview for Each Day: Even though you may not be a great writer, you will be asked to write your responses to the Lord in a love letter format Several steps will be taken each day as you go through these fourteen days. First, you will worship God in general and then for a specific attribute, a different one each day. As part of your worship, you will record ways you have seen that attribute in operation, especially in your own life and the lives of those who are close to you. Notice in the samples that this is done in a conversational manner, not just a listing out of things. The more your time is in a conversational style, the more you will be able to break down the wall of formalness that too often keeps us at arms length from our Friend. The questions on each attribute are designed to help you better appreciate the importance of God possessing each of His attributes. Often times, looking at God causes us to see our own sin. A time is included for self-searching of the last twenty-four hours along with questions about specific sins. Next, you will focus on a specific element or type of prayer. In focusing on that element, you will be praying for your own specific concerns and those of your family, friends, or church. Each day includes a time to thank the Lord specifically for what He has done in the last twenty-four hours. Verses for meditation and to claim are given for various areas along with a suggested Scripture passage. You should also spend time listening to the Lord and writing out what He has said. Close with giving your day to the Lord and a time of praise. The fourteen days are designed to have variety in the content of each prayer time. The more variety there is, the less chance for boredom or losing interest. Naturally, you may add to each day whatever other things are on your heart. But this gives you a new approach and a foundation on which to add any other materials you wish to bring to the Lord. As you start each day, you may want to orally say something like the following: Father, today as I talk with You, I ask that first of all this place be a holy of holies for You and me where nothing else is allowed to interfere. May only your Spirit speak to me during this time. NOTE: Everyday you will want to pray for the following:
Each person will take a different amount of time to complete the suggested amount. Try to do every part of the day’s experiment, but if time will not allow you to or you are struggling too much, then do what you can. Your goal should be to do it all, so if you are having problems, try to do a little more each day so that you work your way up to a larger chunk of time. Above all, don’t let it become a burden or put you on a guilt trip. Ask the Lord to change you, to help you have a heart that desires this more than anything else. Thank Him that He is in the process of changing you because this is your heart’s desire and is consistent with what He wants. Claim the promise of 1 John 5:14-15. Try journaling your prayers in a loose-leaf notebook and in a love letter format. Do this especially in the praise, worship, and thanksgiving sections. Date each day’s writing. Requests can also be journaled, but daily ones might take too long for the busy person. It is also an excellent way to keep focused, on track and to have more accountability. Consider putting marks in your loose-leaf notebook. You may want to put an arrow on the left-hand side of the page at any point you want to remember. An M also could indicate a verse you want to memorize later. Using different colored ink also is helpful, especially if you write down a verse in red so you can easily find it later. Green ink could denote someone else’s materials you found helpful and have copied. Your heart’s response to both the Scriptures and these other materials could be in another color. If you do not have a regular plan for reading the Scriptures, start in Psalms. Read one psalm per day, using the day that corresponds with the month (i.e., on the first day of the month read Ps.1; the second day Ps.2, etc.). On the thirty-first day, read something else or review the verses that you have marked in the last month that have been so meaningful. For the next month, you will start with Psalm 31; the second day, Psalm 32, etc. In five months you will read all of Psalms. You may also want to add a New Testament reading depending on your time. In all your reading, it is helpful to underline and make notes as well as record in your love letter what the Lord is saying to you. For those who are more advanced or would like to do so, make an attribute notebook in which you have a loose-leaf notebook. Title each page with a single attribute (love, good, faithful, Provider, Counselor, etc.). Then, as you find a verse that includes that attribute and means something to you, write it out fully on the page. (One verse may be appropriate for more than one attribute, so write it on each page.) In a different color ink you may want to put down any response emotionally you have, or comments or ideas about it. You may also want to do the same thing for Emotions/Concepts like fear, worry, guidance, anger, or lust. In a similar fashion, write out verses pertaining to these words. Also add any personal example(s) of where that attribute has been exhibited by God in your life or that of a friend. You may also want to write down things you read that are appropriate thoughts on the subject from such places as a devotional book, a sermon, or something you hear or read. When you are having a rough day or problems, look to your attribute or emotion page that would cover your problem. For example, when you are having financial problems, look to the one entitled “Provider.” Reading this material can encourage you and increase your faith when it comes under attack. On days you are facing serous problems or difficulties, focus your time on one or more of God’s attributes that will meet or solve that situation. Do this before you bring the problem to Him. You should find the problem seems less severe after focusing on the God who has the ability to solve it. The first four days have a “Prayer Focus” which presents the A.C.T.S. method of praying (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication). This is a simple acrostic to help you remember the different elements in prayer.
Day One Prayer Focus: Adoration. Tell the Lord how much you appreciate Him because of His great love for you. Mention ways in which He has shown His great love recently and in the past. (Ps. 86:8-13) Attribute Focus: Loving (John 3:16; 15:13; I John 4:16). Questions and interaction on this attribute:
Self-examination: Ask the Lord to show you anything that is unloving or displeasing to Him in your life, or that still needs to be confessed. Claim I John 1:9. If necessary go to any person with whom you need to makes things right. The following prayer can be adapted to use in dealing with certain sins. Dear Father, You know I have a problem with ____________. I know this is displeasing to You and hurts You. I don’t want to ______________, yet as much as I have tired to stop, I have been too weak to stop permanently. I give up. If I am going to stop, You are going to have to give me the power to stop. You are going to have to give me the power to stop. So I am asking You, Holy Spirit, to remind me the next time I am about to ______________. Show me what I have to do to resist this sin and then give me the courage to do so. I believe I am asking according to Your will. Therefore I claim Your promise in I John 5: 14-15 that You will answer yes to my request. Thank You that I will be victorious in this. I believe, Lord. Help my unbelief. Sometimes you know something is wrong but just can’t bring yourself to let loose of it. In that case, you need to pray a “pre-prayer” of repentance similar to the following: Father, You know I have a weakness, a sin of _____________ I just cannot give up at this time. I know it is wrong and hurts You, but I am too weak to stop. In some ways I’m scared to stop. I fear the consequences of stopping. But I love You so much, I don’t want anything to be between us. I am now giving You permission to give me the de sire to give it up. Help me fully to trust You in this area, as difficult as I know that may be. I certainly know I will never be able to stop without Your help, so I’m asking for it now. Than You that you want this so much more than I do and that you will change my desires. I love and trust You. Thanksgiving for His Help: Thank the Lord for His help in the previous day. Be specific. Thank Him for His great salvation and all it cost Him. Family: Pray for one or more family members, their needs, claim verses for them, protection, etc…IN resource 16i there are several different compilations of prayers you can use such as praying character qualities or praying for a difficult person, for salvation, etc…Even better is to make a similar one tailor-made for the person and his or her needs. What I Sense the Lord is Saying to Me: Write down whatever the Lord may be showing you. (Am I showing/modeling this attribute of God to others? Is there something I need to correct? To add to my activities?) Do this at whatever point(s) He shows you something. Put on God’s Armor; Give Myself and My Day to Him: Put on the armor of God, preferably out loud. Be certain to ask the Lord to help you keep every thought under His control, to be able to recognize the voice and attacks of the enemy, and to resist them in His power. Ask that He be glorified in this day. Give your time to the Lord, trusting that if something interferes with Your schedule, that He has something better to do with your time for that part of your day. Ask for His peace to rule your day. Closing Thanks and Praise: Close with a time of worshiping the Lord. You may use something from the Scriptures (especially the psalms), or simply express what is in your heart. You can also express your thanks for all He has and is doing for you, what you are learning, how you are feeling toward Him and others, positive changes you are seeing, and His faithfulness, to mention a few.
